South East London Road Network Outlook: Dartford, Erith and Bexley — 26 October to 1 November 2026

Weekly Road Network Overview

The final week of October brings several scheduled road restrictions across the eastern South East London network, with particular attention on the Dartford Crossing, Erith, Belvedere and Bexleyheath.

National Highways has confirmed further overnight maintenance at the Dartford Crossing, including another extended closure of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge.

Meanwhile, local traffic notices identify temporary restrictions associated with public realm improvements in Erith, a new water connection in Belvedere and highway works in Bexleyheath.

These activities form part of planned maintenance, infrastructure and local improvement programmes. The published notices do not establish the extent of any resulting congestion or additional journey times.

1. Dartford Crossing: Overnight Maintenance Continues

The Dartford Crossing remains the most significant strategic-road development affecting the area this week.

National Highways has confirmed further tunnel maintenance and an extended QEII Bridge closure associated with its continuing bridge bearing replacement programme.

Scheduled restrictions

Date

Location

Closure period

26–30 October

Dartford west tunnel

10pm–5:30am nightly

31 October–1 November

QEII Bridge, southbound

Saturday 9pm–Sunday 9am

1–2 November

Dartford east tunnel

Sunday 10pm–Monday 5:30am

During the scheduled QEII Bridge closure, southbound vehicles will be diverted through the Dartford east tunnel, while the west tunnel remains available for northbound traffic.

Height restrictions affecting vehicles over 4.8 metres will apply under the published overnight arrangements.

National Highways advises that planned closures can change at short notice.

The works are part of an established maintenance programme and should not be confused with an unexpected closure caused by a traffic incident.

2. Erith: Walnut Tree Road Closure, 29–30 October

A temporary road closure is scheduled in central Erith as part of the Greater Erith improvement programme.

Walnut Tree Road will be closed to vehicles from the Bexley Road and Erith Roundabout junction, commonly known as the Fish Roundabout.

Published programme

  • Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 October: Preparatory works, with the road remaining open.

  • Thursday 29 October, approximately 8am: Vehicle closure begins.

  • Friday 30 October, approximately 5pm: Scheduled reopening.

The closure is required to allow planter wall installation works to be completed safely.

A signed diversion will be provided, while access to Erith railway station and local businesses is expected to remain available throughout the works.

The restriction represents a temporary change to vehicle access in the town centre rather than a closure of the wider A206 corridor.

3. Belvedere: Filston Road Water Connection Works

The London Borough of Bexley has issued a temporary traffic order covering Filston Road in Belvedere.

The order comes into effect on 26 October 2026 to facilitate a new Thames Water connection near number 10 Filston Road.

The authorised restrictions include the closure of Filston Road between Holly Hill Road and Riverdale Road, together with temporary waiting and loading restrictions.

The council expects the works to be completed within approximately eight days.

Published alternative routes use surrounding roads, including Holly Hill Road, Erith Road, Riverdale Road and Brook Street.

The restrictions will apply when the relevant traffic management signs are displayed.

Although the order provides a longer legal period of validity, this should not be interpreted as the expected duration of the works.

4. Bexleyheath: Brampton Road and Abbotts Walk Restrictions

Further temporary restrictions have been authorised in Bexleyheath, effective from 26 October.

The works affect Brampton Road between Abbotts Walk and Okehampton Crescent, together with the Abbotts Walk junction.

Bexley Council expects the works to take approximately five days.

Signed diversion routes will use surrounding roads, including King Harolds Way, Bedonwell Road, Nuxley Road, Albert Road and Woolwich Road.

Local access arrangements and restrictions will depend on the traffic management in place.

The works are localised and do not constitute a closure of the wider A2 strategic route.

5. Wider Road Network: A206, Thamesmead and Woolwich

The A206 remains an important connection between Erith, Belvedere, Thamesmead and Woolwich, providing access to residential communities, industrial estates and commercial areas.

This week's newly confirmed restrictions are concentrated primarily in Erith and the surrounding Bexley road network.

Previously reported activity around Plumstead and Woolwich remains part of the wider local roadworks context. However, no additional closure or revised completion date for those locations has been independently confirmed for this edition.

For that reason, this update does not repeat earlier restrictions as new developments.

Weekly Outlook: 26 October–1 November 2026

The principal scheduled changes across the area are:

Area

Development

Relevant period

Dartford Crossing

Overnight tunnel maintenance

26–30 October

Erith

Walnut Tree Road closure

29–30 October

Belvedere

Filston Road water connection

From 26 October

Bexleyheath

Brampton Road and Abbotts Walk restrictions

From 26 October

QEII Bridge

Extended overnight southbound closure

31 October–1 November

The Dartford Crossing remains the principal strategic-network consideration, particularly for overnight journeys and high-sided vehicles.

Within the local road network, the Walnut Tree Road closure is the clearest short-term change affecting access to central Erith.

The Filston Road and Brampton Road restrictions may also require motorists to follow local diversions while works are taking place.

All timings are based on published schedules and remain subject to change.

Conclusion

The final week of October illustrates the continuing programme of maintenance and infrastructure improvements across the Dartford and eastern South East London road network.

While the Dartford Crossing works involve a major strategic route, the restrictions in Erith, Belvedere and Bexleyheath are more localised.

The combination of planned bridge maintenance, utility connections and town-centre improvements highlights the importance of distinguishing scheduled roadworks from unexpected traffic disruption.

Motorists should consult the relevant road authority for the latest confirmed closure arrangements before travelling.
