Overview
Public transport and highways information for the week beginning Monday 24 August shows a number of continuing works across South East London, alongside wider activity on London's strategic road network.
Current published works affect sections of the A2, A20, A21, A205 and A206 corridors, with additional restrictions around Greenwich and Deptford.
The coming weekend also marks the beginning of the Notting Hill Carnival period in west London. Transport for London has published extensive road restrictions beginning on Sunday 30 August, adding a major event-related element to the wider London transport picture at the end of the reporting period.
South East London Roadworks
A2 — Old Kent Road
TfL lists lane restrictions on the southbound A2 Old Kent Road at Devonshire Grove.
The works began on 3 August and are currently scheduled to continue until 4 September.
The restriction forms part of utility works on one of the principal road corridors connecting central London with South East London.
A20 — Eltham Road
Lane restrictions are currently listed on the A20 Eltham Road around Reed Close, affecting both directions.
The published works began on 21 August and are scheduled until 27 August.
TfL identifies the activity as utility works.
A21 — Rushey Green
On the southbound A21 Rushey Green between Davenport Road and Rosenthal Road, the bus lane is closed while junction improvement works take place.
The current published period runs until Tuesday 25 August.
The A21 remains one of the principal north-south corridors through Lewisham and towards Bromley and the wider South East London road network.
A205 / Shooters Hill
Temporary traffic lights remain in operation around Shooters Hill and Red Lion Lane as gas-main works continue.
The current works period is listed through to 31 August.
Additional temporary signals are also in place around Academy Road and Shooters Hill Road, with those works currently scheduled until 28 August.
A206 — Woolwich and Plumstead
Longer-term restrictions remain in place around the A206 Woolwich Church Street and Woolwich Ferry Roundabout as TfL continues work associated with the installation of segregated cycle infrastructure.
Further east, temporary traffic signals remain in use around the A206 Plumstead Road and Pettman Crescent as works by Greenwich Council continue.
These restrictions form part of the continuing programme of works affecting the A206 corridor through Greenwich and Woolwich.
Greenwich and Deptford
A200 — Creek Road
Creek Road is currently closed around its junction with Norman Road for bridge maintenance works.
The published closure began on 19 August and is scheduled to remain in place until Saturday 29 August.
The location sits on an important local connection between Greenwich and Deptford and is one of several publicly listed works affecting the Greenwich area during the reporting period.
Wider London Road Network
Several longer-running restrictions remain elsewhere across London.
Utility works continue on the A501 Euston Road, while restrictions remain around Parliament Square, Pentonville Road and sections of the A13 corridor.
TfL also lists continuing restrictions on the A40 Westway, where the eastbound exit slip road to the Northern Roundabout at the West Cross Route remains closed for repair works.
These works sit outside the primary South East London focus of this bulletin but form part of the wider road-network context for the week.
Major Event Context — Notting Hill Carnival
The Notting Hill Carnival takes place on Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August.
TfL has announced extensive road closures across the Carnival area in west London beginning at 06:00 on Sunday 30 August and continuing until 06:00 on Tuesday 1 September.
The A402 Notting Hill Gate is also scheduled to close between Campden Hill Road and Kensington Church Street/Palace Gardens Terrace between 10:00 and 22:00 on Sunday and Monday, with exceptions for buses and pedestrians.
Sunday 30 August therefore brings a significant major-event transport element into the final day covered by this week's bulletin.
Strategic River Crossing Context
The A282 Dartford Crossing remains a significant component of the road network connecting Kent, Essex and the M25.
National Highways states that the crossing carries more than 50 million vehicles annually. Its published figures indicate an average of around 150,000 vehicles per day, compared with a design capacity of 135,000.
The crossing continues to operate as the only road crossing of the Thames east of London, connecting directly with the M25 at both ends.
National Highways also maintains a rolling programme of maintenance and repair activity around the crossing.
