National Highways Crash Tests Highlight HGV Safety Improvements
Overview
New crash testing supported by National Highways and conducted in collaboration with Euro NCAP has highlighted areas where further improvements to heavy goods vehicle (HGV) safety systems could help reduce the severity of rear-end collisions.
The research focused on how passenger vehicles interact with HGV trailers during impact and how existing safety technologies perform in real-world conditions.
Research Findings
Testing examined the effectiveness of rear under run protection systems fitted to HGV trailers, together with the performance of Advanced Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS) found in passenger vehicles.
Published findings indicate that while current systems provide important protection, some trailer designs and older vehicle safety technologies did not consistently prevent severe underrun collisions during testing.

The findings have been shared with industry stakeholders and regulators to support ongoing development of vehicle safety standards.
